FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Some of your most frequently asked questions about infrared thermography services, commercial roofing concerns and our process answered.
What exactly IS Thermal Infrared?
All objects emit heat (infrared energy) as a function of their temperature. The infrared energy emitted by an object is known as its heat signature. In general, the hotter an object is, the more radiation it emits. A thermal imager (camera) uses a heat sensor to detect differences in temperature. A certified infrared inspector can interpret the images to find “hot spots” and inform you where potential concerns may be.
What is it NOT?
Thermal imaging is not magic, It does not give the technician x-ray vision. It cannot see through objects, however temperature pattern variances can be an indication of whats going on below the surface. It cannot see through clothes. It does not emit any levels of radiation.
What is the process like and how long will it take?
The inspection process can vary greatly in the amount of time required for an inspection. Variables include the amount of area to be inspected, removing any cover panels or items that may be obstructing objects to be inspected.
For building envelope and flat roof inspections, surfaces must be dry. Any standing water on roof surfaces will give false images.
What kind of preparation will I need to do?
When any mechanical or electrical inspections are to be done or any time we will need access to secure areas, a qualified assistant should be made available to the inspector.
For roof inspections, the client should verify that the surface is dry and free of standing water. Any puddles or areas of standing water should be removed at least 12 hours before the inspection.
I have a newly constructed building, do I need inspections?
By having us perform a home or building thermal evaluation on new construction, we can help verify that you are getting what you paid for and that costly corners have not been cut. We will be giving you peace of mind.
Why can’t I do it myself?
Aside from utilizing some of the best diagnostic tools available on a daily basis, our inspectors have been trained and certified in understanding the science behind Infrared Thermography. We also have spent numerous hours becoming educated about building science and the building’s related systems.
Can I put it off until later?
Sure. But the longer you wait to check on an issue or implement preventative maintenance inspections, the more it’s costing you money. The sooner you know what’s going on, the sooner you’ll be saving money! We want to save you money.
Do you fix the problems that you uncover (or have resources for those who will)?
As thermal infrared technicians, our job is to identify the problem, not diagnose. We will inform you if we find an anomaly but we do not repair them. If you are in need of a contractor to repair an issue, we can definitely offer suggestions.
Why should I trust you to do this?
Every Allegiance Infrared Inspector has been trained and certified by Infraspection Institute, the oldest independent infrared training and infrared certification firm in the world. The Institute’s Certified Infrared Thermographer® training and testing program has set the standard of excellence for infrared predictive maintenance since 1980. Because of this, we can assure you that you will be receiving the highest quality of service and skill for your infrared needs.
What will be inspected?
Whatever area is causing you concern or where ever you would like tohave preventative maintenance done.
What are the immediate benefits of having this done?
By knowing where current issues are, you can address them before things get worse. By knowing where potential issues could appear, you can plan to have repairs made rather than needing repairs in an emergency situation.
How much will this cost?
Every job will require a custom proposal, as pricing will reflect the time it will take to perform the thermal inspection, the time it will take to analyze the findings, and any travel expenses, if applicable. Please contact us for a proposal today!
